What is CBD, where it comes from, it does, which conditions and symptoms it treats, its side effects, and research

What is the CBD??

CBD is a medicinal, non-psychoactive component of Cannabis.  CBD commonly recommended for: Crohn's disease, inflammatory bowel disease, epilepsy, insomnia, pain (usually with THC), arthritis, auto-immune disorders, psychosis, and even as a general health tonic.

CBD medical properties:

  • anti-inflammatory

  • anti-psychosis

  • anti-insomnia

  • anti-pain

  • anti-seizure

"Of all the vitamins, minerals, Vitamin-C, resveratrol, fish oils and the rest, my cannabis oil is more valuable to me that all the rest combined." - Dorian Yates - 6 time Mr. Olympia winner.

Cannabidiol, or CBD is a substance called a cannabinoid with a molecular structure is similar to THC with small differences that alter its behavior in the body.  It is now known that the cells have at least three receptors that interact with cannabinoids, which include THC and CBD.   What is more, THC and CBD work differently in isolation; i.e. it has been shown that even a little CBD causes THC to be more effective and pleasant for recreational use as compared to mono-THC strains, that is, in the vast majority of cases.

Cannabis treats Colitis and Crohn's

About twenty years ago, high CBD strains surfaced.  In the 1990s, testing of cannabinoids revealed that some strains contained appreciable quantities of CBD (5% or more).  Medical marijuana researchers went on to study the differences between weed with CBD in it as compared to the commonplace mono-THC cannabis that literally had all other cannabinoids bred out of it.

"Cannabinoids like CBD supplement the bodies own chemicals called endocannabinoids.  When endocannabinoids are in short supply or are imbalanced, seizures, run away immune responses, nervous conditions and pain can be triggered.  There is a mounting body of evidence that suggests that appreciable benefits can be achieved by supplement one;s diet with but a few mg per day." - 420EVALUATIONSONLINE

With the advent of the internet, the news of CBD spread among researchers and its amazing medicinal properties were documented.  One early and outstanding result; CBD tinctures stopped seizures, in adults and children.  Strains were found and selectively bred to produce strains that had little THC but lots of CBD (removing it all together is probably a bad idea).   This strain was used to produce tinctures, oils and herb (flower).

In the double speak from the various Federal Medical mouthpieces, they claim that medical marijuana has not medicinal value.  At the same time the FDA granted a patent for synthetic THC.  Another example is that the US Feds sponsored in part the discoverer of THC's work, which later became the foundation of the Israeli Medical Marijuana program, which is used to treat their veterans.  The final nail in the coffin is that the US Government holds several patents for the medical application of phytocannabinoids, which is to say, the components of cannabis.  In other words, the Feds are completely discredited and further debate is a complete waste of time.

Further insult to injury is the declaration by the Feds ,is that in 2017, CBD was classified as a narcotic, in the same class as heroin and crack - with no medical use.  All the while CBD, in reality, has a very low toxicity if at all,, and in fact, there are no documented deaths every attributed to CBD.   Researchers round the world routinely describe CBD as very safe, perhaps one hundred thousand times safer (or more) than addictive and life threatening opiates, which are prescribed massively to millions upon millions of Americans every year.

  • Lowest toxicity on drug index

  • Lowest side effect rating

  • Affects and modulates the CB2 receptor particularly abundant in nerve, membrane and immune cells.

  • Does not affect the CB1

  • Does not affect the CB2 receptors which can cause a psychoactive response

  • Interacts with other receptors subtly, such as the serotonin receptor 5-HT1A and the GPR55 receptor

  • Able to treat "untreatable conditions" without appreciable side effects

A study published in ?Pharmacology & Pharmacy? showed that a concentrated CBD whole plant extract was more effective at treating the symptoms of pathological diseases than pure CBD.  This phenomena is why the pharmaceutical approach, to use isolated forms is an abject failure.  The only people that find synthetics acceptable are only those that never tried real organic marijuana.  Such is the lowbrow medical paradigm of today.

In fact, in what is now known as the Entourage Effect, the superior effectiveness of whole plant cannabis medicinals was discovered from the get go.  Testing of ancient cannabis hash revealed THC delta 9 (the psychoactive one) plus delta 8 THC, CBD and a CBN. Furthermore, what must be the foremost expert in Cannabis research, Dr. Mechoulam, of Israel, discovered in the 1960's that whole plant extracts worked much better than isolated THC or even mono-THC strains for that matter.  So, in a way, there is no real progress scientifically, but there is a more widespread knowledge of the entourage effect, as well as a deeper understanding of the mechanisms or how cannabinoids interact with the receptors and bodily systems.

Not only do the different cannabinoids interact with one another, terpenes or essential oils (which account for marijuana's fragrance) also figure significantly into the equation.

420EVALUATIONSONLINE:  Medical marijuana patients are tax exempt from paying a healthy portion of California State Cannabis Tax, which amounts to up to $80 per ounce of weed with either CBD or THC in it as the major ingredient.  Any adult can become a medical cannabis patient in California by getting an online medical doctor's recommendation.  The process takes only a few minutes to type in your conditions and symptoms.  420EVALUATIONSONLINE documents are used at licensed dispensaries, delivery services and any other supplier of marijuana in the Golden State.

CBD may be introduced in many forms, including transdermal application in creams, sublingually in tinctures form, in edibles using CBD oil as an ingredient, or by vaping the herb itself.

Anyone with a serious condition should seek competent professional advice and preferable a medical doctor with many years experience in cannabis based medicines.  If a professional is not available, then the next best bet is to consult with one via the internet (Telemedicine).

Dosing is a complicated topic, but there are some simple strategies that medical professionals practice effectively.  One is to start at 1 mg of CBD per Kg of body weight, which is 50 to 100mg.

Another approach is to start with only 10 to 20 mg, and then add 10 mg every two weeks until benefits peak.  This method is called finding the minimal effective dose, a process that should be undertaken with every drug, but this can be a crap shoot, as seen commonly in standard medical practice.

Products containing CBD consumed orally are mainly found in the form of oil, capsule or spray, the latter being used under the tongue. The dosage of the CBD is not yet well-defined by science, and varies depending on the disease, but it is common to start by using 1 mg CBD per kg of body weight, then gradually increase the dosage until an effective quantity is determined.

"CBD can also be used in creams, ointments and other cosmetics, this topical applications are particularly effective against localized pain and skin problems such as acne or psoriasis."

There are about two thousand scientific publications on CBD, at a rate of a couple of hundred per year.  We are talking about the work of Phds from recognized Universities, medical doctors from prestigious institutes and hospitals.  Researchers overwhelming find that CBD and cannabinoids are efficacious and promising to treat a myriad of conditions and symptoms.  In addition, cannabinoids are found to be very safe.  Only a few percent of researchers report over all negative results, with these findings being suspect due to the intent of the study, ie funding and goal is negative.

Cannabidiol (abbreviated as: CBD) is one of at least 113 psychoactive cannabinoids identified in cannabis. It is a major phytocannabinoid, accounting for up to 40% of the plant's extract. CBD does not appear to have any psychoactive effects such as those caused by THC, and it may have a dialing-down impact on disordered thinking and anxiety.

A cannabinoid is one of a class of diverse chemical compounds that acts on at least three cannabinoid receptors in cells that activate and modulate neurotransmitters in the brain, nervous system and several other body systems.

"In coordination chemistry, a ligand is an ion or molecule (functional group) that binds to a central metal atom to form a coordination complex. The bonding with the metal generally involves formal donation of one or more of the ligand electron pairs.- Ligand Wikipedia

Ligands for these receptor proteins include the endocannabinoids (produced naturally in the body by animals), the phytocannabinoids (found in cannabis and some other plants), and synthetic cannabinoids (manufactured artificially). The most notable cannabinoid is THC and secondarily CBD.
