Dog gone. Strange and Amazing Marijuana

The Urban Myths - True or False?

Smoking Marijuana causes Lung Cancer

False.  It's just the opposite. Smoking Marijuana does not cause lung cancer; Infact, it might help

There are many safe ways to medicate with marijuana to effectively treat a myriad of disorders.  Popular methods to medicate include edibles, patches, vaping, toking, bongs and sublingual.

Without knowing anything about the scientific literature, it is logical to think that smoking marijuana cigarettes is harmful to the lungs. However, this idea does not bear out in reality.  Due to marijuana's anti-cancer and anti-asthma properties, smoking weed has been shown to benefit the respiratory system including the lungs. In other words, Marijuana smoking is does not cause  lung cancer, nor other cancers of the tongue, throat and esophagus that plague smokers.

"Salbutamol and THC significantly improved ventilatory function. Maximal bronchodilatation was achieved more rapidly with salbutamol, but at 1 hour both drugs were equally effective. No cardiovascular or mood disturbance was detected, and plasma total cannabinoids at 15 minutes were undetectable by radioimmunoassay. The mode of action of THC differs from that of sympathomimetic drugs, and it or a derivative may make a suitable adjuvant in the treatment of selected asthmatics."

Daily smokers are more likely to go to the doctor

False.  According to a Boston Medical Center research paper, those that consume marijuana daily are no more likely to visit a doctor than non-smokers. This is an amazing statistic if you consider that many people with AIDs, cancer, and other disorders that necessitate hospital care smoke medical marijuana.   Because sick people use marijuana daily to get better, feel better, one would expect that the cannabis smokers group would have a higher incidence of hospital visits.

“Herb is the healing of a nation, alcohol is the destruction.” - Bob Marley

Daily Marijuana consumption is an effective way to treat Chronic Pain

True.  Marijuana has been used for millennia to treat pain.  Whoopi Goldberg and Queen Victoria, both used Cannabis to relieve their cramps and migraines.  US Pharmacopeia in 1930 listed Cannabis and tinctures thereof, to be a potent painkiller and was especially good for women's issues.  Literally every study done on marijuana indicates that it's safe and it's opioid counterparts are, in every case, found to be dangerous with potentially life threatening side effects.

"Preclinical and clinical studies have suggested that they are useful to treat diverse diseases, including those related with acute or chronic pain. The discovery of cannabinoid receptors, their endogenous ligands, and the machinery for the synthesis, transport, and degradation of these retrograde messengers, has equipped us with neurochemical tools for novel drug design."

"Currently available treatments, generally opioids and anti-inflammatory drugs, are not always effective for certain painful conditions. The discovery of the cannabinoid receptors in the 1990s led to the characterisation of the endogenous cannabinoid system in terms of its components and numerous basic physiologic functions. CB1 receptors are present in nervous system areas involved in modulating nociception and evidence supports a role of the endocannabinoids in pain modulation. Basic research on how cannabinoid receptors and endocannabinoids intervene in pain mechanisms is progressing rapidly."

Marijuana makes you creative

True and False. Marijuana makes many people more creative, but high THC weed makes others paranoid and anxious.  Strains high in certain terpenes and CBD afford a better medicinal and psychological effect for a wider variety of people, than does turbo-boosted THC weed.  Major artists and performers, that can obviously handle THC claim they are inspired to produce their best work while smoking a joint or two.  Some lovers find that making love is other worldly when mating high.  On the other hand, some overly stoned people end up being functionally useless, which is the anti-epitome of the creative.

"I smoke a lot of pot when I write music. So I'm not gonna... like... sugar coat it for "60 Minutes" know...I... I'm some... like... sober human being, 'cause I'm not. I drink a lot of whiskey and I smoke weed when I write. I don't do it a lot, because it's not good for my voice. I don't want to encourage kids to do drugs, but  when you ask me about the sociology of fame and what artists do wrong; what artists do wrong is they lie...and I don't lie. I'm not a liar." - Lady Gaga, who does better on weed than Amy Winehouse did on Booze and Whitney did on crack.

Smoking Marijuana all the time will make you fat.

False.   According to many research studies. the cannabinoids in marijuana, such as THC and CBD modulate the receptors that affect appetite.  Generally, individuals with eating disorders have a dysfunction in the biochemistry that turns on and off feelings of hunger. In eating disorders, the body's endocannabinoid system is chemically imbalanced and that naturally occurring cannabinoids are insufficient to turn on or off impulses in a healthy way.

"randomized control trials provide evidence that marijuana use leads to increased appetite and caloric intake, but not necessarily weight gain!"

In a study by the published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, daily marijuana users showed a lower risk of obesity than marijuana non-users. Another study showed that regular cannabis users have thinner waists and lower insulin levels than those cannabis-free.  Marijuana is also used to help people gain weight and treat nausea. Probably, Marijuana is the single best treatment for anorexia, because it stimulates a healthy appetite. while reducing the fears that led to the psychological imbalance -  that exists at the core of this terrible disorder.

"Our findings show that the enactment of MMLs is associated with a 3.1 percent reduction in the probability of alcohol consumption and a 4.8 percent reduction in the probability of binge drinking" among this younger group, the researchers found. They posit that medical marijuana availability may lead some younger adults to "substitute away from highly caloric alcoholic beverages toward a lower-calorie marijuana 'high,' resulting in lower body weight and likelihood of obesity."

Marijuana is bad for the Heart

True and False.  Marijuana tends to raise the rest heart rate which could be a bad thing for individuals suffering from heart disease.  Also, a THC overdose can cause a panic attack where the heart beats frantically, nearly out of control.  However, there is a mounting body of evidence that suggests that THC and other cannabinoids lowers inflammation and this is useful to people with high blood pressure.

"Cannabinoids, the bioactive constituents of the marijuana plant and their synthetic and endogenous analogs cause not only neurobehavioral, but also cardiovascular effects. The most important component of these effects is a profound decrease in blood pressure and heart rate."

Also, most of the clinical research revolves around THC and high THC strains.  Most experienced medical professionals are leaning toward balanced cannabis medicines with a variety of terpenes and other cannabinoids besides the psychoactive THC.  The benefits to the cardiovascular system and heart of the "other cannabinoids"  such as CBD, CBN, CBC are only now being studied.  Early research indicates that cannabis based medicines to treat cardio issues are not only possible, but probable.  The takeaway is that people that have heart issues should consult an MD that has deep experience in the field of Medical Marijuana.

"Our data demonstrate that oral treatment with a low dose of THC inhibits atherosclerosis progression in the apolipoprotein E knockout mouse model, through pleiotropic immunomodulatory effects on lymphoid and myeloid cells. Thus, THC or cannabinoids with activity at the CB2 receptor may be valuable targets for treating atherosclerosis."

Smoking Weed all the time makes you Stupid

True and False.  Some legitimate studies have shown that excessive marijuana can cause impaired verbal and cognitive problem solving ability.  The impairment seems to be short term, as gluttonous marijuana users appear to return to "normal' after three weeks of cold turkey.  Mentioned previously, there is little to no evidence that smoking CBD or low THC hampers any cognitive ability.

"I have friends who smoke so much weed they can't literally get off the couch." - Howard Stern

" Is smoking marijuana every day bad?" is not a yes / no question.  At the end of the day, the decision to use marijuana on a daily basis is highly personal and situational.  If you have chronic pain, smoking the right strain in the right amount is definitely good for you. If you have debilitating pain, 24/7 and cannot sleep or eat, there is no question that marijuana is the safest of any pain killer, straight up, and hands down.

Daily users of balanced strains high in CBD have few, if any negative side effects of note. If you have no physical or mental issues, but you are smoking high-THC marijuana all the time, you have to question that.  Have you become a useless eater?  Are you avoiding the reality of life? In any case, everyone should get smarter about the science of weed.  Try different strains or even blend them.  Take note of your side effects.

At the end of the day, does smoking marijuana help you get closer to the man or woman you want to be?
