NO FAIL CANNABIS OIL A simple, quick, no-fail, nontoxic method to extract oil from marijuana

NO FAIL CANNABIS OIL

A simple, quick, no-fail, nontoxic method to extract oil from marijuana for medical, recreational use right away. Also provided is some details about the how and why we do what we do plus words of wisdom from veteran home cannabis oil producers - with idiots weeded out.

A simple no-fail method to make healthy high quality home-made cannabis oil.   All materials used are found in a typical kitchen.  If there is something you don't have, it will be readily available in the local hardware store.  This method of manufacture does not use dangerous or banned solvents and complies with the new California marijuana laws of 2017.  Let's go.

WHY CANNABIS OIL?

Cannabis oil is a concentrated form of marijuana that can be conveniently consumed medically and recreationally:smoked, vaped, taken under the tongue, or taken orally in the form of edibles, in creams and more.  Cannabis oil can be added to any recipe that calls for cooking oil or butter.

SUMMARY

Cook ground marijuana in alcohol and the oils go into solution. Then boil off the alcohol and nnly the marijuana oil remains.  The sections of this procedure are:

  • Ingredients - select the right strain

  • Prepare  - equipment and workspace

  • Grind - marijuana in coffee grinder or blender

  • Soak -  marijuana in pure grain alcohol

  • Stir - mixture for three minutes

  • Strain - mixture into another container

  • Repeat soak & strain

  • Evaporate - boil off the alcohol

  • Product - collect  the Cannabis Oil

  • Fill container, syringes with cannabis oil

INGREDIENTS

While most people use bud to make cannabis oil because the THC, CBD and other cannabinoids are concentrated there.  However, the leaves and stems from the whole plant can be used to make cannabis oil as well, it just takes more plant material to collect a potent oil.

It is highly recommended that  lab tested marijuana or organic home grown are used.  In any case you want to do a visual and a sniff test.  If your weed smells moldy consider returning it or discarding it.   Use a strain that is proven to be effective for your conditions and symptoms or delivers a superior cerebral experience.

It is good to know what the cannabinoid profile is, the amount of  THC, CBD and others that are present so you can make another batch with the same or differing potency.  See the further reading section for advanced information about selecting weed.

THE WORKSPACE -  SETUP EQUIPMENT

A kitchen or workshop with electricity and a sink makes for a very good, nice, happy workspaces.   If possible, select a clean, open well ventilated area.  Electricity and a sink You also want privacy.  Even though marijuana is legal and this method does not use banned solvents, nosy neighbors could be confused from a distance and call the cops.  So draw the blinds and secure your privacy.   A small fan is useful to disperse fumes from the process,.

It is a good idea to have a fire extinguisher handy in any kitchen and at all times.  In this method we are using alcohol, which is very flammable, but nothing like gasoline or butane where misuse can result in explosions.

MATERIALS

To produce cannabis oil you need marijuana and a solvent.  The cannabinoids, the THC and CBD must be soluble in the solvent. We want to use a solvent that can be easily and safely removed from the oil after it is extracted from the marijuana.  If some of the solvent remains in our oil, it should not be very toxic or totally non-toxic.

The cannabis oil extraction method is based on using one ounce of marijuana flower (bud).

Three ounces of trim can also be used to produce a fine oil.

GRIND BUD

Grind dry one ounce of marijuana or three ounces of trim in a coffee grinder or blender. You can clean the blades with grain alcohol and add it to the following mixture.

GRAIN ALCOHOL

Purchase 1 gallon of ethanol, which is the same thing as grain alcohol.

High proof (180+) 90% plus grain alcohol is used.  In fact, grain alcohol, which is also called ethanol is natural and is completely harmless in low quantities.  Ethanol is found in beer, wine and all alcoholic beverages.  Residual amounts of ethanol at worst could amount a few ppm, which is less than 1/10000 an ounce.

"A side note is that the medical profession has gotten into the habit quiet some time ago to use isopropyl alcohol, which is actually toxic quiet.  Drink it and you will go blind or die.  Isopropyl alcohol or rubbing alcohol is absorbed through the skin and this practice amounts to microdosing of a toxic substance.  Such is the non-scientific nature of some :"accepted" medical practices." - 420Eol Science

APPARATUS - TOOLS

1 medium sized glass or ceramic mixing bowl. - Do not use a plastic mixing bowl
1 wooden spoon
A fine straining device such as: a muslin bag, grain steeping bag, clean pair of stockings, cheese cloth, tea filter, or coffee filter with a mesh strainer
1 container to catch the liquid-oil product; a 2-quart glass jar or mixing cup
1 wood spatula
1 double boiler (for range) or rice cooker and candle warmer

Note: Watch out for rice cookers from China with metal surfaces that are commonly coated with BPA.  This is a real health hazard.  BPA is a plague that has resulted in the enormous incidence of sexual/reproductive issues.  BPA works slowly and consistently over time to foul the reproductive system of mammals, causing breast, ovary and prostate cancer, infertility and hormonal aberrations which cause erratic behavior.

SAFETY

This procedure is not very dangerous and does not use toxic chemicals and materials.  Still beginners should consider the following safety information.

There is no substitute for knowing what you're doing.  All the safety gear in the world won't prevent a nasty mishap if you're brain dead. With that said, as a beginner, you want to especially take note of safety issues.

You should wear safety glasses with good visibility.  They need to be comfortable because loss of focus is really the biggest factor in accidents.   Safety glasses that fog up are worse than none at all, generally speaking.

Wear protective gear.  Again, you need to be comfortable and wear something that does not catch edges, does not catch fire easily.  For example, a badly fitting lab coat catches on the edges and is a safety hazard, as are clumsy gloves.  Rubber gloves work fine, but are only required if you are working with hazardous substances, which this method does not call for.

Nonetheless, beginners should wear rubber gloves when handling solvent.   Respirator masks must be worn when dealing with particulate, but the reality is that solvents are drawn readily through most masks and are a hazard in giving the user the impression that they're safe when the mask is doing nothing but getting in the way.

At the end of the day, your safety equipment should be comfortable, fit well and actually protect you.

EXTRACTION OF CANNABIS OIL USING ETHANOL

Place one ounce of marijuana buds into a medium sized glass or ceramic bowl. Pour the high proof alcohol over the medical marijuana until it rests an inch above the surface of the medical cannabis.

Stir the alcohol-bud mixture with wooden spoon. Mix and mash the solvent and medical cannabis together for two to three minutes. The constant stirring motion will aid the solvent in absorbing the THC from the medical marijuana.

Strain the solvent-medical cannabis mixture into another container. Retrieve your straining device and second container. Place your straining device into the second container. Carefully pour the mixture through the strainer and let the dark green liquid fill the container.
If you are using a bag or cloth, squeeze/press the contents inside the cloth to releases the rest of the liquid into your container.

The resultant  liquid is a mixture of the alcohol and the extracted resin from the medical cannabis  Right now you probably extracted out about seventy percent of the oil, so we repeat the process to get most of the rest.

REPEAT THE EXTRACTION

Soak, mix, and strain the mixture a second time. The first wash will remove approximately 70% to 80% of the resin from the medical cannabis. This second wash will remove the rest of the THC
Empty the contents of your strainer into the medium sized mixing bowl
Pour the solvent over the marijuana so that it is completely submerged
Use a wooden spoon to mix and mash the alcohol-cannabis mixture for about 3 minutes
Place your strainer over the container, which contains the dark green liquid.from first extraction
Slowly pour the contents of the mixing bowl in your strainer. Allow all of the dark green extract to run into the container.  At this point, you've captured perhaps 95% of the oil, and a third wash is pretty much counterproductive, is a waste of time and materials (solvent)

SEPARATION OF THE CANNABIS OIL FROM CANNABIS

Boil off the solvent in a double boiler. When it is time to boil off the alcohol, you have one of two options. The first is to use a double boiler and a range. This is a very safe method.

Fill the bottom part of your double boiler with water. Pour the dark green liquid into the top pan. If you cannot fit all of the liquid in the pan, gradually add it as the level drops.

Turn the burner on high and wait for the liquid in the top pot to boil. Once the liquid in the top pot is bubbling (the alcohol is evaporating), turn off the burner immediately. The heat from the boiling water below will continue to burn off the alcohol.

Allow the contents in the top pan to bubble for 15 to 25 minutes. Occasionally scrape the sides and bottom of the pan with your silicon spatula. If the contents stop bubbling, but still appear runny, turn on the burner to low. Once the contents resume bubbling, turn off the burner.

When the contents become a thick dark green syrup, all of the alcohol has evaporated and all you are left with is the medical cannabis oil. The process is complete.

Remove the top pan from the bottom pan and allow the medical marijuana oil to cool. As it cools, it will continue to thicken.

BOIL OFF THE SOLVENT

Boil off the solvent in a rice cooker. You may substitute a rice cooker for a double boiler.
Fill your rice cooker ¾ full with your alcohol-oil mixture.   If you have an excess of the mixture, add it to the rice cooker as the level drops.Turn the rice cooker on high or select the “White Rice” setting.

Wait and  the solvent-oil mixture will boil down.  Observe the level.  When the solvent-oil mix is becoming a thick, dark green color, remove the pan from the rice cooker, and gently swirl the mixture. When the amount of bubbles rising to the top stops or nearly stops, remove the mixture from the rice cooker.

Pour the green liquid from the rice cooker into a glass or metal dish.  Set the glass or metal dish on a candle warmer. Turn on the candle warmer and allow any remaining trapped carbon dioxide to evaporate from the mixture.  When the contents are no longer bubble, you may remove the glass or metal dish from the candle warmer. The lack of bubbles signifies that all of the alcohol has evaporated from the medical cannabis oil and the process is complete.

FILL SYRINGES OR CONTAINERS

It is best to store the oil in a glass container in a dark cool place.  For immediate use, this cannabis oil can be used to fill a syringe. Slowly draw a measured amount of the medical cannabis oil into the plastic syringe by inserting the tip into the oil and pulling on the plunger up to the required volume.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS - CANNABIS OIL

Q After the solvent evaporated, all that was left was a powdery substance. Did I heat for too long?

A That is probably what went wrong. Alternatively, the temperature may have been too high. Go through all your materials and start fresh. Check the temperature frequently.

Q Can you use fresh picked marijuana to make oil?
A Yes, you can use freshly picked marijuana to make the oil. Be aware that fresh buds will take up a greater volume than dried buds, and you should take the volume difference into account.

Q I used Everclear as a solvent, and the oil did not turn as dark and thick as the demonstrations show. Can I put it back in the rice cooker?
A You can, but it may lose some potency. The difference may simply be due to a different plant type.

Q What solvents can be used?
A High-proof alcohol is the safest solvent to use when extracting the THC from medical marijuana.

Q Is there a recipe to make oil with a low THC content?
A To make oil with low THC content (or high CBD content), you need to start with marijuana with low THC (or high CBD) content.

Q I suffer from epilepsy and arthritis. I take methotrexate, which is slowly killing me. I would like to try this, but it's not legal in our country. What can I do?
A You don't mention your country, but it is possible that you may be able to get a prescription from your doctor. Ask your doctor to find out if this is possible.

Q Can a patient with epilepsy smoke the marijuana instead of using marijuana oil?
A It is possible, but smoking marijuana shares some of the same dangers as smoking cigarettes.

Q How long will the oil keep?
A If you keep the marijuana oil refrigerated, tightly capped and in a brown or blue bottle (to keep out light), it should be stable for 6-12 months.

Q Is medical marijuana good for asthma?
A There are studies indicating that medical marijuana may be  in asthma by acting to reduce the spasms and bronchial constrictions. Talk to your doctor first before trying the medical marijuana.

Q About how much oil can 1 ounce of marijuana make?
A It varies, it after some experience, you should be able to get 2-6 grams of oil per ounce of marijuana.

NEW MARIJUANA LAWS CALIFORNIA - CONCENTRATES & HASH OIL

California Health and Safety Code Section 11379.6(a) under the Bergen Decision in 08 determined that using butane to make hash oil is not covered by the medical use statutes makes it unlawful to engage in the chemical extraction of a substance as part of the process of manufacturing a controlled substance.

The charge carries a prison sentence of three to seven years and a fine of up to 50 grand. Several fires have been reported due to BHO extraction. It is unsafe, and illegal. Butane hash-making equipment and chemicals seem to be a red flag for authorities when it comes to child endangerment charges and possible removal of children from the home.  Read more at Cali NORML
