THE THREE KINDS OF MARIJUANA SEEDS
Did you know that Marijuana has three sexes. Male, Female and Hermaphrodite - which is part male and part female. Seeds are produced when the sperm - the pollen - from a male or Hermi makes its way to a female flower. Once the female flower is pollinated, it stops producing cannabinoids for the most part and puts all its energy into the seed.
WHY MEDICAL PATIENTS WANT TO BUY FEMINIZED SEEDS
Unfertilized marijuana plants produce much more of the desired ingredients - THC and CBD - than fertilized females, males and hermi's . This is the reason why most growers don't want males around. And this is the main reason why a small-time medical marijuana grower wants to have only feminized seeds.
"Quality feminized seeds are perhaps 99% likely to produce a females."
Feminized seeds are bred be void in male chromosomes, so that every flower will be female, which produce the desired fat, juicy, buds full of trichomes and resin, not to mention the active ingredient THC. The trichomes manufacture the cannabinoids and terpenes, which are used to deter insects, animals, fungi and bacteria from invading the seedling. If the seed is not produced, the trichomes keep on working and producing more and more THC, CBD and other cannabinoids until the end of the plant's life cycle.
WHY MALES ARE NOT DESIRABLE
If your plant exhibits male characteristics, it may be destroyed or you can trim off the male flowers.
You can identify a male marijuana plant; they will start to develop what look like little balls and are distinguishable from females by the absence of little white hairs (pistils). A key difference between male and female marijuana plants is that males tend to be taller than females, with more irregular branching and fewer leaves and internodes. It is very important to realize that it takes only one male to pollinate many females.
So, if you don't identify and get rid of the males early in the grow, you're going to have lots of seeds and marijuana with low potency.
HOW FEMALE SEEDS ARE PRODUCED
Feminized seeds are the result of growers "training" a female plant (temporary dual sex hermi) to produce pollen that is used to fertilize another female plant. Training means to introduce some form of stress. Then voila, the seeds that result do not have male chromosomes; and produce only female flowers. The knowledge to produce high-quality feminized seeds has only been semi-perfected in recent years, basically through a lot of trial and error. If you are an old-timer that hasn't grown in a while, you're in for a big shock, in the quality of feminized seeds out there.
Are feminized seeds hermaphroditic?
All marijuana plants can grow flowers of either sex. Any female plant can become a hermit when placed under stress, as a way to reproduce in hard times, when males might not be about to fertilize them. Hermi's can be sprout up at random from females too, but this is rare. Quality feminized seeds have a very high probability of being female only. With that said, you want to patrole your grow operation and keep an eye out for Hermi's that can pop up. With that said, in a small grow of six plants, you're probably going to be ok, even if you are as blind as a bat.
TWO TYPES OF CANNABIS PLANTS - WHY YOU WANT TO START WITH AUTOFLOWER
Two main types of cannabis plants - flowering and autoflowering.
Autoflowering plants do just that, they automatically flower after a given time. Flowering plants produce flowers in response to the amount of light, which corresponds to fall conditions, when the plant needs to get busy and reproduce before winter. Growers manipulate the amount of light when they want their plants to flower. This process is quite an art and skill is required to optimize a crop.
Autoflowering plants are easier to deal with because there is no need to manipulate the light and weeding out males is less of an issue because autoflowers develop well before they can be pollinated. Therefore, autoflowering strains are definitely recommended for beginner growers.
Autoflower plants produce two crops per summer season in most parts of the continental USA and more in most parts of California. Autoflower cannabis also tends to be more resistant to mold, pests, and frost as opposed to highly bred flowering strains.
Yields of any marijuana plant depends on the quantity and quality of the light it receives. In sunny tropical climes, yields will be good, however, in overcast, northern climes, you'll need extra lighting to produce decent volumes of bud, where most of the cannabinoids, the THC and CBD reside.
These days, full spectrum LED lights are best, and for a few bucks, you can put them on an automatic timer for 12 hours on and 12 hours off. LED lights last forever, are not a fire hazard because they don't get hot, and are many times more efficient than any other lighting method.
"Autoflowering seeds have the distinct advantage of featuring elevated cannabinoid levels without needing intense, consistent light."
With non-autos, you need to be very careful with the light type and duration throughout the life cycle; seedling to adult, adult to flower, post flower stages all require different amounts of light and even different colors.
'Did you know that green light is toxic to plants? Green light is a way to introduce stress to a plant, and the response to stress causes different enzymatic reactions to take place, to produce different quantities of terpenes and cannabinoids, or affect physical growth characteristics. The use of greens, blues, reds and ultraviolet all have a place in the art-science of growing marijuana. This is why some want-to-be scientists really dig growing marijuana. There is an element of personal discovery in it. And at the end of the experiment, they can experience the result."
Autoflower varieties are not sensitive to light pollution, but outdoor grows can be affected by the neighbor's patio lighting, street lights. Indoor grows can go wrong by forgetting to turn off the lights - or turning them on over the weekend or some such. This is why you want to use automatic timers and monitor your grow on a daily basis, like taking out the garbage or taking a shower.... A routine,.
REGULAR MARIJUANA PLANTS - NON-AUTOFLOWER
Basically the tactic is provide plants with more light is grow the branches and leaves, then more dark hours will cause the plant to flower.
The phases of 3 main growth are germination (a few days), vegetative (several weeks) and flowering (a couple of weeks). Within the flowering stage there is four sub-stages of flowering: pre, early, peak and late flowering. Novice growers might ignore these flowering phases for the first grow, but keep in mind that they can research their strain and look at changes in conditions to maximize the growth at every point in flowering. The following basic conditions should work fine.
To grow non-autoflower varieties, normally the vegetation stage (after germination to flowering) something like 16-24 hours light and the remaining hours dark; thei maximizes foliage growth which in turn can support the maximum quantity of flowers. Depending on the strain and how the vegetation has developed, the amount of light isd cut back to somewhere around eight hours light and 16 hours dark.
With most strains of marijuana, there is a need to closely monitor the periods and intensity of light while making sure the dark period is dark.
This is not the case with autoflowering seeds. Instead, they can complete their life cycle without needing to alternate 12 hours of light with 12 hours of darkness. They can handle light pollution with ease, making this a great option for people who are growing outdoors in regions with short summers.
Most marijuana strains thrive in the mid 70s, with tropical varieties being happy with the 80's (fahrenheit). There are hearty varieties originating in Russia that are capable of growing well in the upper 60s to 70s, a product of adaption to their environment.
MOISTURE AND HUMIDITY
You want to have a slight breeze flowing and you want light to reach most of the plant. This will prevent excess moisture to build up. Fungus grows very well undisturbed in the dark. A small fan and lighting that reaches the lowest parts of the plant is a simple way to avoid fungus growth. Plant your marijuana in an 8 inch diameter pot with regular agricultural potting soil. Water enough to keep the soil moist, but not wet. Don't let it dry out.
Of course, there are more advanced things you can do, such as add nutrients, fertilizer, manure, balance the pH and so on, but this is beyond the scope of this introductory course on seed types. By adhering to the simple instructions here, you first grow will turn out just fine and lay the foundations for advancement, should you wish to dabble more deeply in the fine fine art of marijuana cultivation..
Obviously it is easier to control the conditions by growing indoor. Then again, by choosing a very hearty auto-flower variety suited to your climate zone, you can be harvesting a reasonable crop of bud, with the minimum of effort.
BUYING SEEDS - SIMPLE RECOMMENDATIONS
If you are growing outdoor, make sure that the variety matches your climate zone - summer to fall conditions. You can grow outdoor if the climate hovers in the 60-75 degree range by choosing Ruderalis varieties. You also want to check and make sure that your chosen strain has the right amount of THC and CBD in it.
If you wish to try a variety that is stimulating but relaxing and curbs appetite, you might want to try South African varieties such as Durban Poison, rich in a little known type of THC, called THC-V.

4 Cannabis plants keep getting bigger and bigger with long days, and start making buds when you give them long nights. Cannabis is a "photoperiod" plant, which means the amount of light received each day decides when the plant starts flowering or making buds. This article explains how much light a day your photoperiod cannabis plants need to grow and start budding, so you get to a happy harvest day. What about auto-flowering strains?
**Vegetative - Seedling or clone leads to Vegetative Stage - Give 18-24 hours of light a day
** Flowering - Flowering Stage leads to Harvest - Give 12 hours light & 12 hours dark each day
