CANNABIS RUDERALIS - NEW POTENT FAST MATURING OUTDOOR HYBRIDS

Cannabis ruderalis is making a comeback of epic proportions.

Cannabis ruderalis is making a comeback of epic proportions.

Ruderalis is generally regarded as a low quality, wild weed variety of cannabis.  Until recently, both casual croppers and serious breeders would never consider growing Ruderalis, and if a Ruderalis weed did appear in their grow by chance, they would immediately uproot it and throw it in the trash.

At maturity, Cannabis ruderalis grows to about two feet and takes about seven weeks to mature.  Ruderalis plants are thin, with a fibrous stem sporting sparse foliage with large open leaves.   Ruderalis produces flowers based on its age (Autoflowering), as opposed to Cannabis Sativa and Indica, which blossom, with the lessening of light received (senses the onset of winter).

Cannabis Ruderalis, Sativa, Indica

Old school Ruderalis (above).   Actually, ruderalis is bigger in reality.

Ruderalis has much less THC in comparison to finely honed Sativa and Indica strains, however the Rusky herb can be very high in CBD. Not that the benefits of CBD are widely known, strains rich in this cannabinoid are in high demand.

Cannabis ruderalis was identified as a distinct species in 1942.  Janischewski, a Russian botanist, researcher of wild cannabis discovered the "new" Ruderalis species in Southern Siberia.  This variety is a hardier variety that grows in the somewhat harsh environments, all the way from the Himalayas to southern Russia.

Ruderalis thrives as a weed in the midwestern United States and Canada too.  Large, wild C. ruderalis populations are also found in central and eastern Europe, Lithuania, Belarus, Latvia, Estonia.  Many wild Ruderalis varieties were originally bred for fiber or as herbs, but over the last hundred or so years, they have been naturally selected.  These wild varieties are non-optimal for medicinal, recreational or industrial purposes.  However, they are the most likely of any cannabis species, to survive a nuclear winter.  Thus, Ruderalis is an attractive strain to grow toughness, CBD and autoflowering properties into a prolific THC strain, that lacks in robustness and balance.

Now, landrace hunters delve deep into the woods to find a little champion. They're looking for a Ruderalis that flowers early, and is disease and insect resistant, with an abundance of secondary cannabinoids, especially cannabidiol (CBD).

The marijuana industry thank's God for protecting these wild natural plants from the US government, who is dead set on denying cannabis from the people, in any shape or form.  In the 1930's even non-psychoactive varieties of cannabis, the type used to make rope and papers.  In fact, the Feds only sponsor research that aims to prove cannabis is bad, period.  Meanwhile, the Federal government has filed for several patents that claim that marijuana can effectively treat several diseases.  This is classic Orwellian double speak.

AN IMBRESSIVE HYBRID RUSKY-SKUNK

The first documented crossing of Ruderalis with higher THC Indica and Sativa strains was performed in the Great White North in the 70's.   These early hybrids produced strains with intermediate quantities of THC, which was the be all, and end all, in the minds of early producers.

Later, Mr. Nevil, proprietor of the original Seed Bank that produced many of today's drug varieties.
experimented with crossing Ruderalis strains with Mexican, Skunk#1 and Indicas, with the hope of producing a new strain with high potency that auto flowered early.  However the resulting strains tended to be low in potency with shrunken and deformed buds.  ;(

Enter BC’s Mighty Mite.  In the Gulf Islands of British Columbia, a grower noticed a few plants in part of his garden always finished much earlier than the rest.   After several years of selecting among these early flowering varieties, Mighty Mite was born.  Mighty M retained its hearty heritage, could survive the late season drought common to the area, and yielded buds first, well before the market was flooded.   Over the years, these genetics flowed into many other strains as other underground growers incorporated Mighty Mite's qualities into their favorite strains.

A cultivar of note, DJ Short speculated that Ruderalis was introduced into the drug cannabis gene pool from repeated selection for early flowering traits from Indica based strains rather than Russian Weed. It was speculated that Indica too possessed the autoflowering trait.somewhere deep in its genetics.

EARLY FLOWERING  - WHAT WE KNOW

Our "regular" marijuana strains begin to flower once the night period reaches the plant’s critical night length, which varies on genetics. Most commonly, summer light in the temperate climates of the northern hemisphere is 14 to 16 hours and declines to 12 by early September. 12 hours is the key light/ darkness amount that signals plants to flower.

Many of today’s Ruderalis/drug strain hybrids flower automatically when they reach a given maturity, regardless of photoperiod, even if they are under 18 hours of light a day.  The will  completely mature from seed to bud in less than 90 days, which reflects their adaptation to the short growing season of their native Siberia.

"I’ve seen test plants from Mighty Mite hybrid lines that were started outdoors in early March, and had completely finished by late July. This could indicate that crossing auto-flowering plants to those that are photoperiod determinant lengthens a genetically predetermined period required before non-photoperiod dependent floral onset."

Ruderalis/drug hybrids can be very sensitive to other environmental factors. When cloning, letting the plants get too dry or getting too pot bound can send them into premature, heavy flowering.

While it has yet to be firmly established what genes are responsible for the autoflowering expression, there is obviously an internal biochemical clock, which may be the exponential decay of some plant protein produced at germination, which spawns an enzyme, that sets in motion the coding and enacts plant metabolism, to produce cannabis flowers.

Autoflowering Haze strains ripen in the middle of summer, in areas where previously even the earliest Indicas would not ripen in time. Commercial growers can pull two crops per summer without playing with shading!

CLIMATE

A big problem associated with breeding outdoor varieties in northern latitude areas like Northern US, Canada or Holland is that the lack of heat and direct sunshine tends to produce plants low in psychoactive THC.

"In northern climes, so long as the breeder selects for high potency on a dual-parent level, potency can be maintained.  If the  same breeding program were undertaken in an environment that naturally selects for high THC plants (like highland Colombia or Thailand) the resulting average desirable cannabinoid levels will be much higher."

RUDERALIS VARIETY FIN 314

It is hypothesized that the variety FIN 314 was developed from Russian Ruderalis genetics and has similar autoflowering as seen is  Mighty Mite. It is thought that at least one parent was a Ruderalis accession-4.  It appears that the strain FIN 314 is being widely adopted across the country.

CURRENT STATE OF AFFAIRS

Though there are good Ruderalis hybrid strains out there, too often, commercially available Ruderalis strains are crap and don't meet the qualifications as medical cannabis, i.e. low in THC and CBD.   Mighty Mite derived indoor-lines from a reputable supplier seem to be a safe bet.

As many governments ease up on antiquated cannabis laws, more and more people are taking up growing.  The simple autoflowering outdoor varieties seem destined to be growing on the back deck, for an easy harvest only three months after planting.  In latitudes from Portland to San Diego, two crops per year are possible.

420EvaluationsOnline:   Until the year 2018, medical marijuana dispensaries and other vendors of cannabis based medicines (including delivery services) require buyers to have a medical doctor's 420 evaluation, to treat their symptoms and conditions.  Our online process is 100% online and clients don't pay unless they are approved.  We also provide cannabis ID, renewals and cultivation permits.  This online medical cannabis evaluation process complies with the guidelines for Telehealth, as specified by the California Board of Medicine.

What Is Cannabis Ruderalis? - LEAFLY

have you heard of cannabis ruderalis? Jorge Cervantes, grow guru and author of The Cannabis Encyclopedia says, “Botanists disagree as to whether C. ruderalis qualifies as a separate species or subspecies.” To answer some of the questions we receive about cannabis ruderalis and autoflowering genetics, we put together a quick background on this lesser-known classification of cannabis strains.

Ruderalis cannabis is a Ruderalis plant from Russia. Native Strain breeder.

You can't tell if the Ruderalis gene is in a plant by its look. A friend was developing a version of white widow from a Canadian strain that was  extremely potent and resinous - after several generations auto flowering turned up - so they destroyed the whole line seed stock and all. A couple of Canadian seed banks have used it quite a lot. In Holland, its hardly been used at all, Nevil experimented with it and dropped it. Sensi sells a hybrid version and it is in Swiss Miss -/ Myst but that's about it....

Ruderalis strains Discussion in 'The Breeders Lab' started by Hickey,

I am confused about Ruderalis strains. They are an autoflower indica/cross strains. Low level THC high CBD.  Where can I find some ruder seed, high CBD, or low THC?  First, can you find typical un-feminized strains? Second, can they be cloned successfully?
Third....If Fem strains are only avail, can you force to flower as a male with stress, what about LIGHT cycles?   I would love to experiment with CBD levels for oils. and want some more info.
