Can I study cannabis in college?   You bet you can, at the undergraduate and doctorate levels.   You just might not know how smart you were to ask this question, for the marijuana industry is pegged to create hundreds of thousands of new jobs, including well paying professional positions.

We provide examples of state of the art programs, from artsy to full on academic, in the US, Canada and the Netherlands.  The better educated you are, the better chance you have at securing a professional position that will support a reasonable lifestyle, as opposed to sitting at home unemployed with a student loan and a diploma on the wall that nobody wants.

In the world of cannabis there is room for everyone.  From doctors, to chemists, to farmers, to budtenders.

Deloitte, a major accounting firm released a 2016 report predicting recreational marijuana could be worth about $22.6 billion to the Canadian economy.  Converting the above numbers to the US market we have a probable $200 billion dollar industry.

“The amount of economic growth that we will see throughout the country is significant, and New Brunswick is poised to get a significant percentage of that if we act smartly and we act appropriately.” - NB Premier Brian Gallant

A PROVINCE THAT COMMITS TO EXCELLENCE IN MARIJUANA

Gallant’s government announced it has made weed a major part of its economic strategy, and plans to “build a ‘best-in-class’ hub of infrastructure and research clusters to attract new investment” in marijuana.  This includes academic studies at the highest level.

There are many areas to go into.

  • Biochemistry, the cannabinoids, the terpenes, and the many other medicinal compounds.

  • Synthetic Medicinal Chemistry - From the starting ingredients of THC and CBD, many novel compounds may be synthesized into medically interesting compounds.

  • Clinical Work - Many types of cannabis based medicines, dosage, routes of administration, in a wide variety of conditions is required, and qualified people to conduct these trials will be in high demand.

  • Cultivation - This is a whole world in itself.  There is out growing, indoor, effects of the different colors on the growth cycle, so bio-physics knowledge is useful.  There are thousands upon thousands of strains to look at, with the number of possible hybrids enough to keep man busy for the next hundred years.  Hydroponics is yet another world upon itself, one could dedicate an entire lifetime.  Expert knowledge in every one of these sectors will be in very high demand until the market saturates, sometime in the distant future.

  • Marketing- in this $200 billion dollar business, there will be a lot of spaces to fill and marketing people that have a degree in Cannabis Sciences will surely have an edge over those who donèt.

  • Then there is retail.  Budtenders, like a good bartender knows every drink, every customer's likes, the grapes in a particular vintage.  Similarly, a great budtender should know if Kush is an Indica or Sativa, and wouldn't it be fantastic to awe them by pulling facts out of your hat like, ancestry of Durban Poison is such and such, and  off the cannabinoids which include THC-V, and terpenes that account for its aroma.  You bet that would be awesome.  And you would like to be that guy.  Could be too, that is if you have the right education.

  • Law - every business sector needs legal specialists, and cannabis will require more than usual, due to the contradictory nature on laws and regulations, with many interpretations and precedents yet to be set.  This means a lot of work for lawyers.  Everyone that is going into the marijuana business would benefit highly by understanding basic legal principles and especially how the laws of the land impact their business.

  • Genetics - genetics are becoming a big deal.  Most of the strains do not have detailed genetic studies done on them .  More precise knowledge about straining genetics can lead better selection of traits, which can enhance the production of certain components, cannabinoids and terpenes, which could lead to better efficacy and a higher value product.

  • Web Sciences -  Most aspects of every business utilize the web, and Cannabis is no exception.  If youère applying for a web job and say you know java, php, html, etc and have a degree in weed, who do you think will get the gig, the guy with the weed degree or the one withoutÉ

  • Formulations - Cannabinoids can be added to cosmetics, lotions, in edibles, effectively, and in countless ways.  A formulation chemist highly educated in the field of formulations will get work now.  Go west young man.

  • Cuisine - Edibles form a large part of both the recreational and medical sectors of the cannabis market.  A gourmet chef of cannabis is in high demand by the brand name producers and up and comers that are newly financed.

Hot - Sports Medicine - The sports world is abuzz (pardon the pun) with CBD, the main non-psychoactive component of some strains of cannabis.  Sportsmen are using cannabis pre-workout as a bronchodilator, enabling a better cardio workout and even superior cerebral focus.  Former Mr. Olympia, Dorian Yates exclaimed that in his medicinal chest of vitamins, supplements, fish oils, his cannabis oil is more beneficial that all the other supplements combined.  In pro sports, many federations are legalizing CBD and removing weed from their banned list, as it can be an effective pain killer, anti-inflammatory, and studies have even shown that it regenerates bone and nerve cells.

  • And there is more - Blue Collar positions galore! How to Get a Decent Job in the Medical Marijuana Industry in California  This two part series goes deep on the vast array of jobs in the medical and recreational cannabis sectors. In any discipline you favor, just google it and add cannabis or marijuana and then survey the results,  Come back here and see what the 420 schools here have to offer.  Then you can make your battle plan.
