"THC and its analogues may provide an improved therapeutic for Alzheimer’s disease by simultaneously treating both the symptoms and progression of Alzheimer’s disease.”

Study after study - worldwide - conclude that marijuana is a safe and promising treatment for Alzheimer's.  While big pharma and government is dragging its feet, many MDs are recommending cannabis based medicines due to its obvious efficacy, high probability of benefit / negligible chance of harm.

Alzheimer's is a dreaded, horrible condition that has baffled orthodox medical doctors for a long, long time.  The efforts by Big-Pharma, their new drugs and therapies have simply failed to deliver despite the billions of dollars spent.

ENTER CANNABIS BASED MEDICINES

Gary Wenk, Dr. of neuroscience, immunology, and medical genetics at Ohio State University, states that if one smokes a significant amount of marijuana in their 20s and 30s and then stop, it may have wiped out all of the inflammation in the brain and there is not enough time for inflammation to do appreciable damage in old age.

The implications that marijuana’s medicinal effects on our brains are monumental, from not just a health perspective.

However, an ancient remedy, marijuana, has provided not only hope, but astounding results.  Now that medical marijuana is legalized, patients are finding out the some strains of cannabis are working wonders in the elderly.

“In contrast to previous studies aimed at utilizing cannabinoids in Alzheimer’s disease therapy, our results provide a mechanism whereby the THC molecule can directly impact Alzheimer’s disease pathology…" - Lisa Eubanks, PHD, Scripps Research Institute

What has happened is that the truly private sector's scientists and growers are advancing rapidly; they are breeding varieties of marijuana that with various cannabinoid content.  Cannabinoids are the main active ingredients of cannabis; THC is the main psychoactive component and CBD is the main psychoactive component.  There are other cannabinoids and substances that are highly medicinal as well, making medical marijuana an incredibly versatile medicine.

Cannabis works directly to modulate receptors responsible for cognition and mood, which is an obvious problem found in dementia sufferers.  While Cannabis has profound preventative and regenerating properties, the greatest thing about it is - it can work wonders - right here and now.

  • Preventative

  • Decreases protein production associated with dementia

  • Cannabis is anti-inflammatory

  • Cannabis is antioxidant/neuroprotectant

  • Stimulates neurogenesis - nerve and brain cell growth

"Alzheimer’s Prevention Starts with Marijuana" - British Journal of Pharmacology

With the legalization of medical marijuana families are finding out it works.

“Inflammation within the brain is a major component of the damage associated with Alzheimer’s disease, but it has always been assumed that this response was coming from immune-like cells in the brain, not the nerve cells themselves. When we were able to identify the molecular basis of the inflammatory response to amyloid beta, it became clear that THC-like compounds that the nerve cells make themselves may be involved in protecting the cells from dying.” - www.alzheimers.net

At the end of the day, most forms of cannabis based medicines have yet to be systematically tested on the patient's. Veteran users are aware that some strains high in CBD with moderate amounts of THC are more generally more effective than mono-THC varieties.  Also, habitual weed smokers could be smoking the wrong medicine and are getting too much of a good thing, which everyone knows is a bad thing.

FB Pamela Kiss I had 2 grandmother's pass from alzheimer's and it's horrible. There was nothing to stop it. Marijuana needs to be legalized and our government needs to stop heroin from coming into the country. It's on every street corner. I know pills started the addiction process but all the state and governments are blaming all the deaths on pain killers rolling heroin onto it as it to is a pain killer. I'm starting to believe it's in the free trade agreements. Every week I hear of at least 1 person in Battle Creek who's OD'd.

In so many words, synthetic cannabinoids showed tremendous promise.

Heavy conclusion:  EXPERT OPINION: Based on the complex pathology of AD, a preventative, multimodal drug approach targeting a combination of pathological AD symptoms appears ideal. Importantly, cannabinoids show anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective and antioxidant properties and have immunosuppressive effects. Thus, the cannabinoid system should be a prime target for AD therapy.

THC is a considerably superior inhibitor of Aβ aggregation, and this study provides a previously unrecognized molecular mechanism through which cannabinoid molecules may directly impact the progression of this debilitating disease.  In other words,  cannabis trial result are extremely exciting to these researchers.

Paraphrase results, exciting news for Alzheimer's patients....Our results indicate that cannabidiol exerts a combination of neuroprotective, anti-oxidative and anti-apoptotic effects against beta-amyloid peptide toxicity, and that inhibition of caspase 3 appearance from its inactive precursor, pro-caspase 3, by cannabidiol is involved in the signalling pathway for this neuroprotection.

Exciting news, study shows that cannabis based medicine works in Alzheimer's on so many levels.  "At the treatment concentrations, no toxicity was observed and the CB1 receptor was not significantly upregulated. Additionally, low doses of THC can enhance mitochondrial function and does not inhibit melatonin's enhancement of mitochondrial function. These sets of data strongly suggest that THC could be a potential therapeutic treatment option for Alzheimer's disease through multiple functions and pathways."

Cannabinoids are brain food

While findings from six studies showed significant benefits from syntheti cannabinoids—dronabinol or nabilone—on agitation and aggression

We believe that natural phytochemicals may represent a promising sources of alternative medicine, at least in association with therapies approved to date for dementia.

Wow!.  The present study also demonstrates that natural cannabinoids do not affect cognitive impairment associated with healthy aging in wild-type mice. The positive effects induced by Δ9-THC and CBD in aged AβPP/PS1 mice are associated with reduced GluR2/3 and increased levels of GABA-A Rα1 in cannabinoid-treated animals when compared with animals treated with vehicle alone.
