"We continue to run California as if the longest drought we are ever going to encounter is about seven years, We're living in a dream world." - Scott Stine, Professor Cal State East Bay.
With a population of about 96.000 people (2016), Vista city ranks as the 75th largest city in California. The Vista area was originally inhabited by the Luiseño Native tribe, until the founding of the Spanish San Luis Rey Mission in 1798.
Did you know? Vista has more than 25 educational institutions?
From 1820-1850s, the ranchos began to fade due to changing a cut in funding (from the King of Spain) and an awful, lengthy drought after the Mexicans took control (1822). As the drought receded, a growing number of settlers began buying land and broadened the agricultural produce base; growing fruit and veg in addition to the existing cattle and dairy. From this solid agricultural base, a little settlement grew to the point where the US postal service gave the OK to service an office.
Local powerbroker, John Frazier applied to open the first post office and after several attempts to name the city (Frazier’s Crossing and Buena Vista were already taken), Frazier finally chose the name "Vista". With the opening of the first post office in 1882, Vista had officially arrived.
"We continue to run California as if the longest drought we are ever going to encounter is about seven years," said Scott Stine, a professor of geography and environmental studies at Cal State East Bay. "We're living in a dream world."
Did you know? In 1886, the French Delpy planted several hundred acres of grapes and built the first successful winery in the country. The winery was shut down in the prohibition era by those freedom hating Feds. Their job is to keep the people safe and free, not be a nanny from hell, as in satan's companion.
Vista's lack of water became a serious impediment to growth. In 1910, the population was less than 1,000. In 1923, the people saw fit to pipe in water from a new supply at Lake Henshaw.
Just like that, the fields began to bloom and agriculture and supporting industry blossomed. Cash crops included tomatoes, celery, citrus and avocados a plenty. The Vista became known by some as the "avocado capital of the world".
After World War II, agriculture declined, but housing boomed. After a rapid expansion, The Vista peoples incorporated the city in 1963. The city's population exponentially increased the with the on and off booms of the 1970- 2004. During this period, the face of the community changed from a robust rural farming town to a sprawling residential community.
Numerous apartment complexes were also built in these booms. Many light manufacturing businesses moved into the Business Park area on the south side, starting in the 1980s. In the 1990s, Wal-Mart, Target and Costco opened large stores. In 1993, Vista became involved in a national controversy when the Vista Unified School District board unsuccessfully tried to incorporate creationist, anti-evolution views into the biology curriculum.
Today, the top 10 employers in Vista are:
- Vista Unified School District
- San Diego Superior Court
- Watkins Manufacturing Company
- Zodiac Pool Care
- DJ Orthope
- Jeld-Wen Windows and Doors
- Datron World Communications
