With a population of about 130,000, Visalia is the 45th largest city in California. Visalia serves as the administrative center to some of the most productive agricultural lands in the United States.
Located nearby are the world famous Yosemite, Sequoia, and Kings Canyon National Parks. The adjacent Sierra Nevada mountains are the highest mountain range in mainland United States.
The original land was named and shaped from the many creeks that flowed from the towering Sierra's. The over-abundant supply of water that water-logged the land which also supported some of the largest trees on the planet. The first written record of European habitation dates back to 1722, when a Spaniard set up a small outpost. With the Mexican-American War, nearly all Spanish lands fell under American control. In 1850 Visalia was nothing more than a random assortment of homesteads.
From the Man on the Street
Visalia is ranked as one of the best cities to live in. Where teen pregnancy rates are the highest, Meth labs can be found in most neighborhoods, and most of the male adults are habitual marijuana smokers. These habits are regularly passed down to the children. A city whose finest high schools compete for cow skins, and pass the time cruising Mooney while smoking a joint. The suck, once you leave, you will come back. A place where your wildest dreams will not come true, however, your wildest dreams will keep you happy enough to love Visalia to the end.
"Where are you from? - I'm from Visalia motherfucker Where is that? If you don't know, then you don't need to know." - Urban Dictionary
Basically, in the early years, Visalia was a fun but dodgy place.Early city growth came after the Gold Rush of 1848. At that time, there were about 80 inhabitants, 30 of which were children. Vasilia was on the route from St. Louis to San Francisco. Soon hotels, saloons sprang up to service the inbound fortune seekers, plus a motley crew of outlaws, nasty and notorious individuals that preyed upon the innocent.
Famous Visalia Gunfight
"The Battle of Stone Corral, also known as the Gunfight at Stone Corral, occurred in June 1893 and was the final shootout during the pursuit of the Sontag-Evans Gang. After months of searching and several previous encounters, a small posse under the command of Marshal George E. Gard ambushed John Sontag and Chris Evans at a corral near Visalia, California. Both of the outlaws were badly wounded during the engagement. Sontag died three weeks later in police custody on July 3, 1893, but Evans managed to escape and was captured a few days later though he lost an eye and his left arm."
Vasilia was incorporated in 1874. At this time, it was split on the issue of the Civil War, and split internally over other issues but came together peacefully after 1880. In 1900, the evil empire, the Pacific Sugar Company moved into town, providing jobs and the most dangerous white powder known to man. A little known fact is that more than 100 years ago electric powered transportation out competed the gasoline internal combustion engine and coal powered locomotive. In 1904, the Visalia Electric Railroad was incorporated and served the another forty years.
In time, electric powered cars and trains would become victim of the Big Corp rubber, automotive, petroleum syndicate. Enemies of the petroleum fuel were biodiesel and alcohol, electric transport, and hemp. This syndicate would wipe out all industries, with prohibition, bribery and shenanigans left, right and center. Now, some people debate, are biofuels sustainable? is electric power practical? Well, in 1900, farmers could make their own fuel and electric powered mass transportation was working like gangbusters. In most places where electric cars were in operation, the transit time 100 years was roughly twice as fast as today. What a shame.
Throughout the years, the economy of Visalia was driven by agriculture - grapes, olives, cotton, citrus, livestock, with notable manufacturing and distribution facilities (electronics and paper products. Recently the light manufacturing and industrial/commercial distribution represents the fastest growing portion of Visalia's employer base.
The top ten employers in the city are, in order, are Tulare County, Kaweah Delta Medical Center, College of the Sequoias, Family Healthcare Network, the City of Visalia, VF, International Paper, Jostens, Cigna, and Visalia Medical Clinic.

14 Arrested in Cannabis Caper -2015
At the height of marijuana season, law enforcement is "making hay" with major busts a plenty. One week after several thousand marijuana plants were ripped from the ground, Tulare County’s STEP team was at it again in the Lindsay area. Obviously, this clever costly game of cops and robbers could be avoided entirely with full on legalization of marijuana. These larger Weed caper investigations routinely cost hundreds of thousands of dollars or more when it's all said and done.
