About Stockton
With a population of about 320,000, Stockton is the 13th largest city in California. Stockton is a rarity; it is one of the few cities that was not founded by the Spanish or Natives. The city got its start as a seaport that serviced the Gold Rush of 1840's. The All-American city is home to the oldest university in the state. Ironically, this formerly successful city declared bankruptcy in the 2008 financial crisis.
Interesting Stockton
Stockton is one of the more interesting towns in California. Did You know? .. In 1937 the city's canning industry made a move that sparked "The Great Spinach Riot." Stockton had the largest Chinatown in the Country at one point as well. You have to love the nicknames for Stockton from yesteryear. Fat City", Port City, Mudville, Brick City.
A captain Charles Weber became a kingpin in the Gold Rush business. First starting as a miner, he soon switched to businessman. Weber acquired much of the land in and around Stockton and set up residence. The town known as Mudville grew in size to the point where it was incorporated as a city in 1850.
Stockton's multi-cultural history is deep and generous portions of peoples from around the pacific rim; Americans, Pacific Islanders, Europeans and a large quantity of Chinese.
The Chinese set up shop in masse in the 1850's. These hardworking family oriented people were barred from owning land. The Chinese were a most important source of labor, building the early infrastructure of highways and railroads. Amazingly and disgracefully, the ban was only lifted in 1962.
Fat City demonstrated well California's mighty innovative and entrepreneurial spirit, Stockton became a supplier of farming machinery and later a manufacturer. The caterpillar was invented in Mudville to work...muddy fields.

Stockton has banned cannabis dispensaries as well as cultivation for commercial and personal use. A handful of dispensaries had been operating in defiance of the law until very recently. The Record reported that, “The city filed lawsuits in August 2015 against Collective 1950 and an east Stockton dispensary, Elevate Wellness, arguing both were operating in violation of an ordinance adopted by the City Council in 2013.”
