About SOUTH GATE
With a population of about 98,000 (2016) people, South Gate is the 74th largest city in California.
The "Azalea City" was incorporated in 1923. The city was named in 1918 after the beautiful South Gate Gardens of the original old Cudahy Ranch.
The South Gate area originally inhabited by the Gabrielino/Tongva Indians before the invasion of the Spanish in 1769. The Spanish routine in California was, explore, then declare the territory in the name of the King, grant the land to a Spanish nobleman, hero or some such, who was sick and tired of living in Spain or what-not. The Spaniard's standard use of the land was to graze massive herds of cattle, farming a little something or other to eat with steak.
In similar fashion to their Anglo brothers, in their war of independence in 1776, Mexico won the 1822 War with the country of their origin, scooping California, Texas and other lands in the process. Little did the Mexicans know that their Anglo brothers to the north would win massive chunks of the United States of Mexico (that is actually what the name was) in the Mexico-American War, just twenty five years later.
Under Anglo control (after 1848), plots of 40 acres were cut from the Spanish land grant ranchos. By the 1870's, the endless herds of cattle were replaced by all kinds of crops and orchards. Sounds like progress right? Then local industry was added to the mix. In the 20th century, agriculture was replaced with homes and factories. In the 21st century, factories closed and almost all essential products came from out of town and overseas. Is this progress, is this evolution? - or rather is this straight-up devolution?
They took all the trees - And put them in a tree museum
Then they charged the people - A dollar and a half just to see 'em
Don't it always seem to go, - That you don't know what you've got
‘Til it's gone - They paved paradise - And put up a parking lot
- Lyrics from Big Yellow Taxi - Joni Mitchell

California senator proposes 15 percent medical marijuana sales tax
With the potential for hundreds of millions of dollars in new revenue on the table, California lawmakers are pursuing a 15 percent medical marijuana sales tax. Sen. Mike McGuire, D-Healdsburg, on Wednesday introduced legislation to set a statewide assessment; local jurisdictions would still be allowed to pass their own additional sales taxes.
“We know these dollars will be put to strengthening our communities.” - McGuire
Annual sales of medical marijuana are estimated at more than $1 billion in California, according to McGuire, meaning that his tax could bring in more than $150 million for the state. It would be divided primarily between the general fund and grants for local oversight agencies, with some money for state parks, environmental restoration projects on land damaged by illegal marijuana cultivation, and county drug and alcohol treatment programs.
