About SANTA MONICA
With a population of about 93,000 (2016), Santa Monica is the 81st most populous city in California. With its agreeable climate, Santa Monica was and still is a popular location for resorts, camping, rest and relaxation.
Santa Monica sports a host of interesting and somewhat unrelated nicknames such as:
- Home of the Homeless
- People's Republic of Santa Monica
- Soviet Monica
It is interesting to consider the moniker, Soviet Monica, when the city's citizens have a much higher than average family income - as compared to the impoverished peoples of the former Soviet Union.
Santa Monica's history in a nutshell.
The Spanish settled and created missions and ranchos in 1769. Spanish operations and lands fell under Mexican control after their war of Independence in 1822, The Mexicans subsequently lost control to Anglo-America after the Mexican-US war of 1848.
The seed population of the first Anglo-American settlement was nurtured in no small way by the arrival of the Railway from Los Angeles. Now the city's wharf at the bay could ship stuff off to the big city. Up went a town hall, up went the saloons and hotels to service LA residents - that could now take a wonderful weekend jaunt to the beach. Santa Monica became a major tourist and amusement center.
At the start of the 20th century, there was a major influx of Asian Americans who worked the fishing scene. Generally speaking, the local Anglos found the Japanese to be cool enough but the Chinese were not enjoyed very much to put it mildly.
Santa Monica played a key role in the development of the aviation business. Douglas Aircraft set up shop in 1922 and remained in operation clear through the 1960s. The Great Depression decimated the town like a Tsunami from hell. In 1933, the entire city reported a total of 1000 jobs as compared to a total population of 40,000. But life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get. The town's fortunes turned 180 degrees with World War II, as Douglas Aircraft suddenly employed an astounding 40,000 people to build planes to destroy the Empire of the Sun.
Did you know? Beach volleyball is believed to have been developed by Duke Kahanamoku in Santa Monica in1920ish. If you think about it, this must be true.
Since the 1980's Santa Monica experienced another boom with the revitalization of downtown and a return of tourism.
How did the city get its name? There are three versions out there. We'll go with the offering that the city was named after the mother (Monica) of St. Augustine.

|SANTA MONICA CITY POLICE - THE MARIJUANA FILES|
The anticipation of the DEA’s potential budge on the Schedule I listing of cannabis has spawned a wealth of speculative articles on the subject, as well as some seemingly bogus Internet tales, like the Santa Monica Observer’s “U.S. Gov’t Will Legalize Marijuana on August 1.
” The best intel we have on the matter comes from DEA staff coordinator Russ Baer, who says the federal government is having a difficult time resolving the issue of a Schedule downgrade because its agencies have yet to “identify the parts of the plant that might have benefit.”
