The first mining claim in California was issued by the Governor in the original Santa Clarita lands. In 1842 the Californian gold rush quietly began with a nugget find by Francisco Lopez in the Santa Clarita area. If would take four years before the word got out, that there is gold in them thar hills, or rather them thar river beds.
After the Gold rush died down, a man named Henry Newhall bought much of the land in present day Santa Clarita. Newhall's heirs oversaw the development of the communities that conglomerated into the city of Santa Clarita.in 1987. Oil was discovered only thirty years after the goldrush, setting the table for a full fledged economic boom. California's first productive oil well was put into operation in 1876 with the first refinery processing the oil in Newhall.
Interestingly, the city repeatedly tried to form it's own county, but failed. As an alternative, the people chose to incorporate as the City of Santa Clarita in 1987.

Moonshine, Marijuana Seized from SCV Home by Kern County Cops - 2016
Law enforcement officials seized a still, moonshine and marijuana in Santa Clarita after undercover detectives from Kern County served a search warrant at a house on Park Woodland Place. Place after investigators were alerted to a suspect who was giving out samples of illegally distilled spirits, more commonly known as moonshine, during an event at Famoso Raceway earlier this month.
Upon questioning, the suspect admitted to giving away samples of moonshine and an investigation, acting on that information, an investigation was launched. The Kern County Sheriff’s Office is seeking to find people with information. Concerned citizens can the Kern County Sheriff’s Office at 661-392-4365.
