REDDING - MARIJUANA IN THE CITY
In this article we talk about some interesting facts about the city with a focus on the main issue, Marijuana.
We address the important and frequently asked questions about MMJ:
About REDDING
With a population of about 92,000 residents, Redding is the 89th most populous city in California.
The evidence we have indicates that the Native American Wintu Tribe were first to inhabit the area about Redding about one thousand years ago. In terms of historical origins, Northern California had more in common with Oregon and British Columbia than say, the Bay Area or LA. The Spanish had a presence early on and established very loose control over the Northern California area in the years previous to 1830.
The bigger reality was that numerous European-American settlers made their way to the Redding region via the Hudson Bay Company, who had established trade and travel routes in the early 19th century. The first notable Anglo-European settler to Redding was a person by the name of Pierson B. Reading. In 1844, Reading took over the Mexican Rancho Buena Ventura, which became the northernmost outpost of European "civilization" in California at the time.
Previous to the railroad arriving, the settlement about present day Redding was know as Poverty Flats. With the arrival of the railroad, poverty turned into prosperity, relatively speaking, and the local station was named after either an early pioneer or railwayman with the handles, Reading and Redding.
Did you know? In 1874 town residents changed the spelling of the name to "Reading", to honor local pioneer Pierson B. Reading. But the railroad did not officially recognize the change and the town restored its original spelling, "Redding", in 1880.
Redding was incorporated on 1887, having a population of just 600 people. Only a generation later, in 1910, the population was up to 3,600. The local economy was supported by copper and iron mining while agriculture went into decline. When metal prices, the economy went sour. The population declined but slowly rebuilt as agriculture and other industry came back. The area was inherently rich in natural resources of timber, hydropower, water, minerals and soil was fertile. With a little common sense in initiative, anyone could make a reasonable living in the climes of a Redding.
The Feds decided to build the Shasta Dam, which kept the town in jobs for the next 20 years, thereby "pole-vaulting" over the depression years. By 1940 the population had doubled, as compared to 1930 levels to 8,100 residents.
The city then went into a kind of stagnation until the post World War II boom, when American real estate projects began to demand lumber. The arrival of interstate 5 meant an increase in traffic. From there, the town grew rapidly again and became a "real city" when it annexed the adjoining town of Enterprise.
With the annexation of Enterprise and other areas of the County, Redding became the largest city of the vast region north of San Francisco Redding also surpassed the former California timber capital of Eureka, located some 150 miles away on the west coast. When the timber industry declined in the 1970's, unemployment in Shasta county was among the highest in the Country @ 20% plus.
For better or worse, the economy of the city of Redding made a transition from the industry to a service-based economy, The once plentiful blue-collar jobs are gone permanently lost.
Somehow lost upon local leaders is the idea of self sufficiency. With abundant cheap power and resources, locals can make and grow literally everything needed to survive. Focusing nearly exclusively on the non-essential service industries is foolhardy, no?
By 1990, the statewide housing boom of the 1980's brought the city population up to 65,000. Despite a dodgy economy since then, the city has grown modestly till today.

Struggling California desert towns seek bonanza with pot farms
Two years ago, in this desolate Coachella Valley town surrounded by scraggly mesquite, voters heartily endorsed marijuana as a cure for their ailing economy.
For decades, Desert Hot Springs had relied on its steaming mineral waters to lure tourists to local motels for healing baths and spa treatments. But the town of 28,000 mostly suffered. A third of its residents lived in poverty, and the city filed for municipal bankruptcy in 2001. A housing bust seven years later deepened the fallout.
