With a population of about 168,000 (2016), Palmdale is the 32nd largest city in California. This LA city was first established as a village in 1886, by Lutheran travelers of German and Swiss descent. According to folklore, the travelers had never actually having seen palm trees before, they mistook the local Joshua trees for palms and named their settlement Palmenthal (German for Palm Valley).
By the 1890's, the local farmers could not handle the drought conditions that set in and the settlement was largely abandoned. The settlers moved closer to the Southern Pacific Railroad tracks. This location would grow into the city of Palmdale.
As the population of Palmdale began to increase after relocation, water became a scarce commodity. In 1913 the Los Angeles Aqueduct system brought water from the Owens Valley into Los Angeles County and crops of apples, pears and alfalfa flourished. A highway linked Palmdale with LA in 1921 allowing easy access to local products and services. Of course, the local economy boomed.
Until World War II, Palmdale was predominantly an agricultural community. With the outbreak of World War II, Edwards Air Base was installed in the vicinity creating nothing but jobs. A commercial airport was also set up and an aerospace industry was established. Even today, Palmdale, the Valley of the Palms, is known as the "Aerospace Capital of America".
