Did You Know that Ontario was named by Neil Young, the famous Musician. When he came to town in the 1960's he loved the place and named the area Ontario in homage to his Canadian origins.
Just kidding. It was actually another Canadian, an engineer George Chaffey that named their homestake Ontario way back in 1882, Little did these Canuck's realize that their home on the range would become part of the world's third largest city by gross product, with a metro population nearing 20 million.
No Booze Business in Early Ontario
"The new "Model Colony" (called so because it offered the perfect balance between agriculture and the urban comforts of schools, churches, and commerce) was originally conceived as a dry town, early deeds containing clauses forbidding the manufacture or sale of alcoholic beverages within the town. The two named the town "Ontario" in honor of the province of Ontario in Canada, where they were born.
Ontario was known up until the 1800's as San Antonio. Like most land in the area, it was under Spanish control until the Mexican American war, when most all of today's lands changed hands; to Americans. Today there are many artifacts remain that attest to the 'original' Spanish inhabitants.
With a present day population of 180,000 (2016) Ontario ranks as the 30th largest city in the Golden State. Ontario is home to the LA International Airport, which is the 15th busiest in the world. Old timer George Chaffey never saw that one coming either, we'd venture. Ontario is a freight center that handles Long Beach cargo in transit from LA. a fair number of Aussies found their home in Cali-Canada as well.
Ontario was incorporated as a city in 1891 with the north part of the "ideal colony" (Upland) breaking away in 1906. Since incorporation, the population grew slowly until the 1960s. Then boom, it grew 10 fold in the next forty years. The city attracted a large contingent of Germans, Swiss, Filipinos, and Japanese to make their mark in farming.
Today the largest employers are the airport, tourist attractions, chain stores and distributors, UPS and security systems.

CITY HALL HISTORY OF BANS
Ontario took steps early to address marijuana dispensaries, first banning them in March 2007.
“Cities in California continue to receive mixed messages from the state and federal governments regarding the legality of marijuana for medicinal purposes and the establishment and operation of medical marijuana dispensaries,” according to the ordinance. “This confusion has increasingly led to wasted taxpayers dollars as cities have been caught in the middle.”
The ordinance pointed to then-recent Drug Enforcement Administration raids on various dispensaries throughout the state even though the voters had already passed the Compassionate Use Act of 1996.
In enacting its ban, Ontario feared significant increases in traffic, crime and noise, according to the ordinance.
In October 2013, Ontario city leaders tweaked the ban to encompass mobile medical marijuana dispensaries in any part of the city. About 14 months later, in December 2014, the council adopted an ordinance, prohibiting the cultivation.
