Murrieta is fantastically located centrally between LA and San Diego, meaning that more than 20 million people live within a two hours drive.
With a population of about 108,000 people (2016), Murrieta is the 76th most populous city in California. In the past ten years, the population has increased by 30%, making it one of the fastest growing cities in the State. By 2010, the population of Murrieta surpassed the historically larger and richer commercial sister-city of Temecula.
Did you know? Metro Murrieta-Temecula-Menifee Urban Area had a population of nearly 500,000 by 2015.
For much of its history, Murrieta lay in the backwater, a little settlement in the middle of nowhere, California. The first Europeans to arrive in the area were the Spanish, who declared the lands to be property of the King, just like that, boom, zoom. The King of Spain was out of luck in 1822, just like that, when his troops lost the lands to Mexico in their war for independence.
A Basque named Ezequiel Murrieta, purchased the old Mexican Rancho Pauba /Temecula comprising 52,000 acres with the intent of expanding his sheep-raising business. And expand he did. His brother, Juan brought 100,000 sheep to the valley in 1873!! . Murrieta was spotted on the radar of the outside world when the Railroad connected it to LA and San Diego in 1882.
Since then, Murrieta boomed and then went bust. In a one-two KO punch combination, the great depression arrived and then train service was cancelled in 1935, which caused local industry, including lucrative tourism to dried up.
Murrieta was revitalized with the housing boom of the 1980's. People in the big cities saw Murrieta as a good place to call home and residential developments took off like a rocket, as is evident in the population growth statistics. In 1980, the population was only 24,000, only 20% of today's total number.
Today, the top 10 employers in Murrieta are:
- Murrieta Valley Unified School District
- Southwest Healthcare System
- City of Murrieta
- The Home Depot
- Oak Grove Center
- County of Riverside
- Sam's Club

WILL CALIFORNIA CITIES BE FREE TO BAN PERSONAL MARIJUANA CULTIVATION AFTER (OR IF) THE CONTROL, REGULATE AND TAX ADULT USE OF MARIJUANA ACT IS APPROVED BY VOTERS IN 2016?
Supporters of the AUMA in cities like Temecula and Murrieta fear that it leaves too much control to local governments, which may result in the enactment of city or county wide ordinances that will pull the teeth right out of the initiative. Their criticisms aren't without historical justification.
