With a population of about 83,000 people, Livermore is the 93rd largest city in California.
In 1840s Livermore was founded and named after Robert Livermore, the friend of founder William Mendenhall. Livermore is perhaps best known for its super world-class Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, where many an earth shattering discovery was made, including the discovery and synthesis a new element; livermorium. What other city has its name on the periodic table?
The forebearer settlement was incorporated more than two hundred years ago in 1796 under the guidance of Spaniard, Franciscan Mission San Jose. The Spanish teamed up with the local indigenous peoples to run farming and cattle ranching operations. However, this new workforce was decimated by the diseases brought by the white man - death rates were 50% and higher.
The site of groundbreaking physics experiments was largely sheep, cattle, and horse pasture until the 20th century. Herds ran wild without fencing and were culled once a year.
After the Spanish-Mexican War, most of Californian lands, including those about Livermore were transferred from Mexican to Anglo American hands.
Interestingly, Robert Livermore (1799-1858) was a British citizen that jumped ship in California in 1822 and became a naturalized Mexican citizen. After working as a ranch foreman, Livermore married the daughter rich Jose Loreto Higuera, and was soon master of a. rancho by 1839. Wow.
Livermore had a profound interest in farming; viticulture and horticulture, cattle and horses, vineyards and orchards of pears and olives; much of which he was instrumental in bringing to the land. As the Americans took control of California in 1847 and gold was discovered in 1848, Livermore made a bundle by selling longhorn cattle to the thousands of hungry Gold rushers.
Such were his riches, that Livermore bought a two-story, had it disassembled house and shipped it in "Around the Horn , about 18,000 miles as the sail boat sailed, around Cape Horn from the East Coast. It is believed to be the first wooden building in the Livermore Tri-Valley.
In the early years, Livermore was known for its large hotels and vineyards. In the 1880's the agricultural base grew to include wheat and hay. Mining came to town in the 1920's. Livermore lent its assistance to the Airforce and Navy during World War II and the Cold War. Livermore played a critical role in the Manhattan project and the subsequent development of America's nuclear program.
Today, the top employers in Livermore are:
- Kaiser Foundation Hospitals
- US Foods
- City of Livermore

“RAID ALERT! Raid underway on Care By Design / Absolute Xtracts in Sonoma county (right now) need help from community for support,” wrote spokespeople for patient group Americans for Safe Access, in a Facebook post this afternoon.
According to reports today from the Press Democrat, Sonoma County law enforcement agencies led a series of raids focused on cannabis extraction facilities, and at least nine were detained.
The area, and Sonoma County in general, is a hotbed of cannabis extraction due to local expertise and access to prime sources of raw cannabis. But extraction exists in a gray area. The vast majority of California cities and counties have not yet regulated the industrial activity, with state laws taking effect by 2018. A blue-ribbon panel chaired by Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom released a policy report on Wednesday recommending that any move to legalize marijuana in California should emphasize public safety, limiting access by minors, and limiting corporate control over the maximization of tax revenue.
While the report, drafted by Newsom, Stanford University professor Keith Humphreys and Abdi Sultani, director of the American Civil Liberties Union in California, does not explicitly endorse legalization, it calls for marijuana to be heavily regulated by the state to reduce the illicit marketplace.
