About JURUPA VALLEY
With a population of about 98,000, Jurupa Valley is the 73rd most populous city in California.
The City of Jurupa Valley lands are HUGE, covering about 43.5 square miles.
Though our city lived in the shadow of the more popular City of Riverside, Jurupa Valley was actually founded many years earlier. Jurupa Valley has a rich history dating back several hundred years. The word "Jurupa" comes from the home-name of its original Native American inhabitants. The lovely word "Jurupa" translates as peace and friendship.
The first Europeans to settle in the Jurupa Valley were the Spanish, who morphed into Mexicans. In 1838 the valley lands were known as Rancho Jurupa; a land grant from the King of Spain to Senõr Don Juan Bandini, later transferred to the Mexican government. By the late 1800’s most Californian lands, including the Jurupa Valley, moved into the hands of Anglo-Americans.
Today, Jurupa is a mix of low-density housing with rural agricultural related activities and farming. In recent years there has been an increase in economic activity due to the development of the highway system. In the future, City Hall claims it is poised for expansion in both the residential and commercial sectors.
The City of Jurupa Valley was incorporated on July 1, 2011 with the aid of a passionate group of community volunteers.

“We need to regulate (marijuana businesses) so it’s done right,” - Councilperson
The Jurupa Valley City Council voted Thursday night to ban large-scale cultivation of medical marijuana in the city but will allow residents with a medical marijuana card to grow up to 12 marijuana plants on their property for their own use. The ordinance also prohibits deliveries of medical marijuana even if the dispensary is located outside of the city limits.
The 5-0 vote at the Jan. 7 meeting came after a public hearing that drew comments from advocates of medical marijuana use and opponents who said the dispensaries that continue to pop up throughout Jurupa Valley are a blight on the city.
