About Concord
With a population of about 128,000 (2016) Concord is the the 48th largest city in California.
The city was founded late by a Mexican American Salvio Pacheco in 1869 and a year later the name of Concord was given. The area was prone to disastrous flooding with intermittent periods of prosperity. Concord was chosen by design to avoid the floods and fires that eventually destroyed every town at some point.
The area is blessed with fertile soil, which accommodated outstanding agricultural crops including grapes, walnuts, wheat, hay, tomatoes and vast quantities of wheat. During prohibition, grapes were replaced with walnuts. World War II, brought the industrial military complex to town, with a substantial Naval presence. Unfortunately the city is known for the Port of Chicago disaster where the munitions of a Navy cargo ship exploded, killing more than 300 civilians. Subsequently, many black sailors refused to load ammunition. 50 soldiers were found to be guilty of mutiny.
Today, the largest employers are public enterprises and schools, but there is a smattering of industrial presence.

Weird Concord - The Japanese James Dean Memorial at the Jack Ranch Cafe
"In September 30th, 1955, James Dean died in a horrendous car crash on Highway 46 Located a short distance away from the crash site is the James Dean Memorial, a sculpture of concrete and stainless steel surrounding a tree outside the Jack Ranch Cafe.
Oddly the sculpture was made in Japan by mega-fan Seita Ohnishi. According to urban legend, before his death, James Dean ran into the actor Alec Guinness. Guinness looked at Dean's brand new Porsche, and opined that his sinister looking car was a death trap and he'd be dead in a week in a car crash. "
