Weird Carson City - The Muffler Man's Voyage in Time
Only in California and only in Carson; The "Muffler Man" in Carson was originally known as the Golf Guy, holding a giant golf club while he stood in view of the freeway. You'd think he would stand on the edge of a golf course and did for a while, but the course closed and ended up "golfing" with the Muffler man franchise. Carson's synthetic man finally ended up with the Porsche Experience Center where he got a new paint job, new outfit. The new man about town sported a black and white checkered flag instead of a golf club, complete with velcro and zippers.
With a population of about 95,000 people, Carson is the 78th largest city in California. Thought Carson was incorporated in 1968, is the youngest city in the South Bay region, and actually has a long history.
Carson was home to a settlement of Native Americans when the Spanish came into town in the 18th century. The township lands were in the hands of the ranching Dominguez family for nearly one hundred and fifty years. The rancho would become a political hub of the surrounding area. All good things come to pass and the Dominguez clan decided to sell off land as farmers, businessmen and industrialists moved into the region.
By the turn of the 20th century, the basic building blocks for a successful city were in place. As with other neighboring cities, the community grew rapidly. Today, Carson has a broad range of residents from a range of ethnic backgrounds.

The measure, called the Adult Use of Marijuana Act (AUMA), was drawn up by grassroots coalition Let’s Get It Right led by former Facebook President Sean Parker. Promising hefty regulation and restrictions, the measure would allow Californians aged 21 years or older to purchase up to an ounce of marijuana or edibles at licensed dispensaries and would be allowed to grow up to six plants for personal use.
Notably, if the bill is passed, it would decriminalize possession of less than 1 oz. of marijuana, a prevalent criminal offense. In 2014, there were over 600,000 arrests made on marijuana possession; possession alone makes up for 88 percent of marijuana law violations, according to the Drug Policy Alliance. The issue comes to ballot after activists and supporters garnered enough signatures to call for a vote, according a press release from California Secretary of State Alex Padilla

“Police are not supposed to rely on CalGang as evidence of gang membership. … In practice, they use it to check if an individual is listed as a gang member.”- Peter Bibring senior staff attorney, ACLU of Southern California.
One mild fall evening, two deputies with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s gang unit headed into the streets of Carson, California, where palm trees are tagged with gang graffiti and street signs in some neighborhoods are turned around or removed to confuse outsiders. The deputies, Jon Boden and Alfredo Garcia, had a big job to do. As part of the Operation Safe Streets Bureau, they were expected to get a handle on gang violence in the cities of Carson and Compton.
The deputy forced him onto the hood of the squad car and handcuffed him. Boden pulled two bullets out of the man’s pants pocket; a search of the car yielded a gun safe with a .22-caliber pistol, several grams of marijuana, prescription drugs, a digital scale and two driver’s licenses that the deputies discovered had been reported stolen.....click title to read more.
